Beginning January 1, 2017, Desert Hills will be having Sunday evening services every week at 6pm, an increase from two Sunday evening services each month according to our current schedule. These evening services will not be duplicates of the Sunday morning service but a separate service with worship in song, prayer, and the expositional preaching of the Word of God, beginning with the book of 1 Timothy.
We are adding a weekly Sunday evening service for a number of reasons. Due to work schedules, some people are unable to attend church on Sunday mornings but are available on Sunday evenings. This schedule change will allow people who cannot attend Sunday morning to be part of the weekly fellowship. Also, a Sunday evening service doubles the amount of time we spend together hearing the preaching and teaching of God’s Word, the catalyst for all the other ministry we do. In our culture, we also face the increasingly difficult task of devoting time to worship and fellowship, even on the Lord’s Day. Our schedules have become so hectic and full that worship is easily squeezed out, and Sundays are often given to our own projects and priorities rather than worshiping Christ with His people. A Sunday evening service makes worship the first thing we do on the Lord’s Day as well as the way we close the day together.
Our Sunday evening services will be similar in structure to our Sunday morning service, including Scripture reading, prayer, singing, and hearing God’s Word being preached. We will be using the new hymnal, Hymns of Grace, exclusively for our music on Sunday evenings. In addition to the first Sunday morning of each month, we will partake of the Lord’s Supper together on the third Sunday evening of each month.
One question that has arisen as we have discussed this change is what will happen to the services we have on Sunday evenings now. The prayer meetings that we previously had the third Sunday evening of each month will be on the first Sunday evening of each month, beginning Jan 1 during our annual new year’s prayer vigil. Other special services have been scheduled for 5th Sundays:
Jan 29 – A Night In… (Book to be determined)
Apr 30 – Concert of Praise
Jul 30 – Church-wide Ice Cream Social
Oct 29 – Reformation Day Service
Dec 31 – New Year’s Prayer Service
We trust these services will be of great benefit to you as you seek to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the church body as a whole as we spend more time together exalting Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday evenings on 2017!
